Hey everyone,

I just wanted to wish all of my followers or 'watchers' a very Happy New Year! I hope that 2015 sees you and those close to you blessed with good health, good fortune and general good times for everyone!!! :D

In addition to running two groups here on dA, my time is increasingly being taken up with work. What started as a part time job is soon to have extra hours, extra courses to teach - and extra paperwork to go with it! :(

Its not too bad though because one of my new courses involves teaching the basics of acrylic painting to adults - which I'm both nervous and excited about.

In the past, I've always waited until a piece is finished before posting it to dA, but I find that I'm grabbing a couple of hours here and there and working on a piece gradually - instead of over a whole day. With this in mind, I've set up an Instagram account so that I can post updates of my work as I do it.

I must admit that I've found Instagram incredibly inspiring and quite friendly - so far!

Please feel free to 'Follow' me at instagram.com/art_of_man

I will of course still be around here at dA - just posting finished pieces as often.

Take care,

Dave

As many of you will know, British Olympic diver Tom Daley came out early this morning via a vlog on his YouTube channel.

Now, I rarely get 'political' but on this occasion I want to highlight what a monumental event and turning point his coming out is.

I am aware that things are different in other countries, but here in the UK we have loads of openly gay performers and have had several 'out' sports personalities, but they're pretty much only recognised within their particular areas of sport. With Tom, we have a young sportsman at the pinnacle of his career with about 2.5million Twitter followers worldwide and armies of teenage girls watching his every move.

Instead of taking what some would see as the 'safe' road and keeping quiet, he chose to be honest with his fans and followers by admitting that he's in a relationship with a guy. He was careful not to use any labels and just told it like it is. The cynical side of me thinks that the "of course, I still fancy girls" comment could be a Public Relations ploy so that he doesn't alienate his female fans, however, the other side of me believes that the lack of labels is purely a reflection of how more young people today are comfortable and fluid with their sexuality and their emotions, and don't feel the need to put themselves in boxes.

For me, one of the best things about Tom's coming out is that there were no 'shock' headlines on the news programmes or in the papers, the whole event has been dealt with in a 'and by the way' manner that reflects the importance of the story - and THAT is what MAKES it so important. :)  Just a few years ago it would have been a very different matter!

But by far the best thing is that if just ONE teenager who is struggling with coming to terms with their sexuality sees Tom as an inspiration, and decides not to try and take their life, or sees more hope than they did, then the world has taken another step forward.

In this respect, we can all be an inspiration to others by being true to ourselves and sharing it through our artistic work.

Tomorrow, be the reason for someone's smile. :D

I just want to let you all know that I've taken over as the Founder of
:iconblackandwhiteclub:

The group basically does what it says - all images are in black and white - so if you produce black and white or grayscale work, and haven't joined, please come and join us. We accept all mediums - including crafts - and it would be great to have more of you contribute your work. :D

Yay!!!

Finally, back to normal - or as normal as I'm capable of being! ;)

They say things come in threes, and that's what I got. It started with an infected arm from an insect bite two weeks ago this past Monday. By the Wednesday, the red patch had spread halfway down my forearm and up to my shoulder. It was hot, hard, swollen and itchy, and I could hardly bend my arm at the elbow. A course of antibiotics saw it off in time for me to go down with flu, and then the tail end of that saw my wireless card and hard drive fail in my laptop.

So £80 later, I'm back up and running. Expect some work later this week! :D
